Kristi Mills Rolison

Kristi Mills Rolison, 59, of Winston-Salem, beloved wife, mother, pastor, sister and friend, died Monday, April 16, 2018 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. She bravely fought Triple Negative breast cancer in 2015 and was declared cancer free. The cancer returned in 2017 and ultimately did not respond to treatment. She is finally at peace and no longer in pain. Kristi was born January 10, 1959 in Cliffside, NC, the second child of John Edward and Barbara Sparks Mills. When Kristi was two years old, the family moved to Mt. Airy where she grew up, graduating from Mt. Airy High School in 1977 and from High Point College in 1981 with a degree in Gerontology. Kristi’s early career was spent as a Social Worker at the Baptist Retirement Home in Winston-Salem and then with Hospice of Davidson County, Hospice of Forsyth County as well as Crisis Control Ministries. She answered a call to ordained ministry and in 2000 entered WFU School of Divinity where she earned a Master of Divinity degree. She graduated in 2003 and faithfully served two congregations as their pastor – First Presbyterian Church in Pilot Mountain, NC and Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg, VA. Kristi was a gifted preacher, a strong administrator and a caring pastor. Kristi is survived by her husband of 32 years, Phillip Rolison; two sons, Alex, of Greenville, TN, and Ben, of High Point, NC; sister, Ellen Mills Bergland (Bob) of Wilson; and brother, John Mills, Jr. (Ginny) of Winston-Salem; eight nieces and nephews; father-in-law and mother-in law, Harry and Janet Rolison of Winston-Salem; brother-in-law, Danny Rolison, of Knightdale; sister-in-law Audrey Weil (Ken) of Darien, Conn.; brother-in-law Alan York (Becky) of Lewisville;and a host of friends and church members who loved and admired her. Kristi was a light to all who knew her and a clear voice for those less fortunate. The family would like to thank Dr. Nick Chrysson and staff at Forsyth Cancer Center for their attentive care and treatment of Kristi over the past 3 years and the staff of Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home for their compassionate care of Kristi at the end of her life. A celebration of life will be held Saturday April 21, 2018 11:30 AM at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem, officiated by Reverend Doctor Carl Utley, with a private, family inurnment in the church columbarium. The family will greet friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or to the charity of the donor’s choice. “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. Ellen, Within our hearts, the ones we love are never really gone … in spirit and memory, their legacy lives on. In the loss of your sister may the memory of her comfort you so that she lives always in your heart. May her spirit console you so that you always know peace and promise of eternity. And may the love and thoughts of your friends and family strengthen you, so that you know you are not alone.
On behalf of the Wilson’s First United Methodist Church’s Watson Sunday School Class, I send our deepest sympathy and prayers.

  • Phil & Sons and All Family, I am so sorry for your loss. My Thoughts and Prayers are with you All.

    Phil, Alex, and Ben,

I am so very honored to have been a part of Kristi’s fold at 1st Presbyterian of Pilot Mountain! She enriched our lives through her ministry of eloquently delivered and heartfelt sermons. She baptised babies and adults, led the youth in assisting her with communion to shut-ins, comforted the sick and bereaved, and energetically conducted Bible school, Easter Sunrise services on Pilot Mountain, and wedding ceremonies! She was a marvelous cook who brought mouthwatering dishes to our after-church lunches and who instructed our youth in preparing food for our annual souper bowl of caring event that she initiated. Kristi guided us through the church year, crossed us with ashes, and sang both choruses with our choir and solos from Handel’s Messiah, among which included “How Beautiful Are the Feet of Them” (Deb Alford so well reminds) who preach the gospel of peace! Kristi seemed to always know what to say to bring calmness to a difficult situation or to lighten the burden or come to the rescue of the forgotten. She enjoyed and co-led a weekly noon ecumenical Bible study during her early ministry at 1st Presbyterian where she was both ordained and installed as our longest-serving minister! Her12-year career of service, guidance, and love at 1st Presbyterian dedicated to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will live on in our hearts and minds. It is so fitting to say here about Kristi what I heard her say so often in conducting services of celebrations of life from Matthew 25:21 “Well-done, thou good and faithful servant!”

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Mills and Rolison families at this time. Kristi and I were in college together at High Point College and were Brothers in the Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity. She was very dedicated to everything she did and always putting others before herself, which was one of the principles of our fraternity. We were all very fortunate to have known Kristi!
God bless and comfort her family.

So very saddened to hear of Kristi’s passing. Kristi was actually of a ground breaking group of women at High Point College as one of the first five female Brothers to join Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity in 1978. We all admired her desire for community service to her fellow man. She was special indeed. Heaven is a little brighter today, and we who knew her as part of the Mu Xi Chapter were enriched by her presence in our lives. Rest well my brother!

Although I did not know Kristi well, as one of her clergy sisters I send my hopes and prayers to all her family during this time. May those close to her find comfort in the company of all who grieve her absence, knowing that there will indeed be that time when all are gathered in the arms of our Creator and Sustainer.

My precious cousin, Kristi, I know you are rejoicing in Heaven today…pain-free and living in the light of Lord. While I await our reunion, I will think of you when I have pretend cooking shows with my grandchildren and when they are old enough to put on plays of the their favorite children’s stories. I will think of you every time I listen to the music of Carol King’s Tapestry album or when I see a gossip magazine…the kinds we used to buy when we went to the beach. And since it has been my habit to pray for you throughout my day, I will maintain my prayers for Phil, and Alex, and Ben that God will continue to be their source of comfort and strength.
    All my love,
    Tanya
