Charles Joseph Garity, 77, of Winston-Salem, passed away peacefully Friday, September 27, 2019. He was born March 30, 1942, in New York, New York, to Harrison and Esther Garity. Charles served in the Navy on the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the USS 62 Enterprise, as an aircraft mechanic. After his time in the service, he attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. He moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to work at Piedmont Airlines and raised his family. He retired after working for Rexam for more than three decades. Charles was a beloved member of his community. He was known for his love of flying, riding motorcycles, and his charming personality. He was known as "Grandpa" to many and considered his friends as family. He is survived by daughter Diane Garity Hyatt, III (Lester); his granddaughter, Sabrina Garity; a brother, John Garity; and a sister, Virginia Garity-Dohy (Don). It is his wishes that his life be celebrated through an Irish Wake and his ashes be scattered at sea.
