Charles Quincy Hanks, 86, of Walnut Cove, passed away at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on Sunday, July 16, 2017. Charles was born June 19, 1931, in Elkin, NC, to William Walter Hanks and Martha Brown Hanks and grew up in Elkin as the youngest of their four children. After serving in the US Navy from 1951 to 1957, Charles married Betty Jo Royall of Roaring Gap, NC. They moved to Winston-Salem and Charles began his career with R. J. Reynolds. After working downtown for several years, Charles was transferred to the Brook Cove division and his young family moved to their current address in Walnut Cove in 1961. After retirement from R.J. Reynolds Brook Cove, Charles built a cabin in Roaring Gap and enjoyed 30 years of retirement with Jo.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Raymond, Virginia and Herbert. He is survived by Jo, his wife of 60 years; three daughters: Janet Hanks Kiger of Walnut Cove, Joan Hanks Aycock (Tim) of Fayetteville, GA, and June Hanks of Chattanooga, TN; five grandchildren: Jennifer Groce (Jamey), Alison Church (Mitchel), Jonathan Kiger (Macayle), Andrew and Wesley Aycock; four great-grandchildren: Maggie Jo and Katie Raye Church, and Peyton and Colton Groce; sister-in-law Bertha Hanks and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 6 pm on Tuesday, July 19 at New Hope Baptist Church, 4911 Old Rural Hall Road, Winston-Salem. Visitation will follow the service at the church until 8 pm. A graveside service and inurnment will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, July 19 at Liberty Knob Baptist Church on Oklahoma Road in Roaring Gap, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice, Winston-Salem, or Liberty Knob Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, Roaring Gap.
