Dolores (Dee Dee) Ann Harkleroad Moore passed away peacefully Thursday August 3, 2023 at her home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was born on December 13, 1954, in Bristol, Virginia to Estil Lewis Harkleroad and Viola Reed Harkleroad. She was raised in Bristol, Tennessee and graduated from Sullivan East High School; where she played basketball and sang in the choir. She was a member of Addilynn Memorial United Methodist Church, where she shared her gifts as part of the choir for many years. She worked at Burlington Mills on the looms and then at Speed Clip making wheel weights. At Speed Clip, she met her future husband, Larry Bruce Moore. They were married on November 2, 1975 in Bristol. They were married for over 40 years. After their marriage ended, they remained friends and Dee would often share that he was the love of her life. Dee Dee was a devoted pet owner throughout her life, having had numerous cats and dogs, as well as a monkey that her father got for her as a child. She loved all of them dearly, but a special place remained in her heart for her beloved chow mix Kiki, and her Russian Blue Murphy. Kiki, in particular, was her faithful companion, the two of them sharing a love for the water. Many happy afternoons were spent on South Holston Lake or on the beaches of the Outer Banks, one of Dee Dee’s favorite vacation spots. In addition to the beach, she also remembered fondly vacations taken with Larry to Colorado, and with her girlfriends to Las Vegas. Dee Dee was an avid bowler, competing for many years in various leagues at Belmont Lanes. Christmas was a special time for her and she embraced it heartily. She took great joy in decorating her home for the season, and cooking and baking in preparation for Christmas Eve. The holiday was not complete, however, until she had watched a few showings of A Christmas Story during its annual marathon. Dee Dee and Larry resided in Raleigh, NC for several years where she worked for Century Management in their accounting department. They moved back to the Tri-Cities, settling in Kingsport, TN in 2013. She lived in Kingsport until 2022, when she moved to Winston-Salem, NC to be closer to her nephew, Jonathan Crain. Dee Dee was preceded in death by her parents as well as her older sister, Deborah Crain. Deborah passed in 1972; leaving Jonathan to the care of her parents and Dee. Dee willingly accepted Jonathan and treated him as a son. Dee is survived by her nephew, Jonathan (Mona) Crain, Winston-Salem, NC; her ex-husband, Larry Moore, Glade Springs, VA; many cousins, and friends. The family wishes to thank the doctors at Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Health for their kindness and care during her time in Winston-Salem, and the staff at Twin City Cremations and Funeral Services. Per Dee Dee’s wishes, no public service will be held. For anyone wishing to honor her memory, donations may be made to charities benefitting the safety and welfare of animals.
