Dr. Lawrence Lee Rudel, 77, of Winston-Salem passed away peacefully at Vienna Village on Thursday August 29, 2019 after an extended illness. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on September 19, 1941 to Lloyd and Grace Tussey Rudel. Larry spent his early years in Chappell, Neb and Loveland, Colorado. He graduated from Loveland High School in 1959, Colorado State University in 1963, and received his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Arkansas Medical School in 1969. Subsequently, he did post doctoral research at the Banting and Best Institute in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and the University of California in San Francisco. He joined Bowman Gray School of Medicine, later Wake Forest School of Medicine, research faculty in 1973, retiring in April, 2018. His 45 years of research was spent in the departments of Comparative Medicine, Pathology and Internal Medicine. His research focus was on cholesterol metabolism in cardiovascular disease, a lifelong quest sparked by the early death of his father from cardiovascular disease. He trained and mentored graduate students and postdoctoral students, demonstrated research productivity and published his results extensively, received ongoing external funding, and served the national and international biomedical research community. Larry was a committed family man who enjoyed golfing with his sons, traveling with his family, hosting family and friends at his vacation home at Lake Lure, NC and preparing holiday turkey dinners. He was proud of the creativity of his sons and of the accomplishments of his family. He enjoyed the close friendships of several in his scientific community, although they were spread about the country. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Francis Rudel Hadsall. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Bouwman Rudel of the home; 3 sons, Brian (Sheri) Rudel of Tobaccoville, NC, John (Cindee) Rudel of Norfolk, VA and David Rudel of Charlotte, NC; 5 grandchildren, Connor Rudel, Mason Rudel, Rawley Rudel, Ryan Rudel, Ruby Rudel, and a niece Traci Hadsall of Acworth, Georgia. Appreciations to the staff of Vienna Village who showed respect and provided needed care.
