Howard (Sonny) Perry Woodbury, Jr, 76, of Mocksville, NC, died at home with Barbara by his side, on Wednesday March 12, 2025, after several months suffering from cancer. He was born in Wilmington, NC to the late Howard P Woodbury & Florence King Woodbury but grew up in Elizabethtown, NC where he graduated high school. He enjoyed talking about his years there and the fun he had growing up. After graduation he relocated to Wilmington. In 1993 Sonny met the love of his life Barbara Moore McDowell. They were married in 1994 in Carolina Beach NC, and in April of 2025 they would be married 31 years. When Barbara retired from UNCW they moved to Forsyth County where Barbara was from. Sonny was last employed as an independent insurance agent for many years. Prior to that, he and Barbara owned and operated two businesses in Clemmons, NC (a durable medical equipment business and a personal home care business). Sonny enjoyed frequently eating a “vegetable omelet” at “The Rusty Gate Café” in Mocksville. He knew most staff and other regular customers by name and many, he considered family.
He was a member of Yadkin Valley Baptist Church in Advance for over ten years. He loved his church family and always said “there was none better than Yadkin Valley Baptist Church”. It was the friendliest and most caring congregation he had ever been a part of.
He is survived by his wife Barbara Moore Woodbury; from a previous marriage are two daughters, Wendy & Lacey; In addition is a sister, Diana Clark (Robert) of Rocky Point, NC and their two daughters, Deanna Lane (James), and Kristel Clark; a brother, David Woodbury (Patti) of Benson, NC and their son Michael Woodbury; There are several cousins, and a good friend, Jim Page from the Wilmington area; Sonny has a stepdaughter Deborah Fuller (Bob) of Texas and their children. He enjoyed trips to Texas to see his granddaughters (Vivian & Stephanie) and two great-grandchildren (Jesse & Abigail). Barbara would like to say to Sonny’s caregivers, (Brenda, Trenae, Cathy, Rachel, Aimee, & Mike), that she appreciates all of you for your tender touch and compassion towards Sonny and herself during this most difficult time. You have been a blessing and will be remembered well. I would like to thank Liberty Hospice for the care they provided during this time.
