Nicholas Troiano

Nicholas "Nick" Troiano, 89, died Saturday, May 2, 2020, at his home at Forest Heights Senior Living in Winston-Salem, NC. Born and raised in the Bronx in New York City, Nick later moved to North White Plains, NY, to raise the family. After retiring, he resided with friends in Vero Beach, FL, and ultimately relocated to Winston-Salem, NC, in March, 2019, after a brief hospitalization in Florida. Nick graduated from the Samuel Gompers High School, Bronx, NY, where he received an award for excellence in mathematics. Nick served in the US Army with the rank of CPL(T) from 1951 to 1953. He was very proud of his military service. As an infantryman during the Korean War, he laid phone communication lines for fellow soldiers, under enemy fire. For his valiant service, Nick was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, the United Nations Service Medal, and a Combat Infantry Badge. Later in life Nick supported the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and the Korean War Veterans Association, Ch 318, which presented Nick with the Certificate of Ambassador for Peace Medal. After an honorable discharge, Nick began working at New York Telephone as a Cable Splicer Helper in 1956. He worked his way up to Manager and retired from AT&T after 33 years with the company. Post retirement employment included driving a school bus first in New York and then in Florida. When his sons joined the Boy Scouts of America, Nick joined the Boy Scouts Committee and attended many scouting activities with them. Nick was also a volunteer fireman, serving alongside another son, in the North White Plains Volunteer Fire Department (1972-1986). Nick served as president of the department for 5 years. When Nick was not working, he was most likely engaged in some form of tinkering around the family home in North White Plains. Highly skilled at carpentry, plumbing, masonry, and electrical work, Nick always had projects in process. He thought nothing of knocking a hole in an exterior wall to add a "window" air conditioner where there was no window or building a ten-foot high wall out of railroad ties because the family suddenly had more cars than parking spaces and that problem had to be resolved! Some of Nick's favorite pastimes included spending summer evenings and weekends with his family at Rocky Ledge Swimming Association in Quarry Heights, NY. He loved the daily volleyball games with the adults, and swimming and playing shuffleboard, basketball, and badminton with the kids. Nick will be remembered for his sweet smile, his kind heart, his sense of humor, his military service, and for the joy he brought to everyone that he spent time with. Nick was preceded in death by his parents, John and Dora Troiano; and his sister Mary Ann Scalise. He is survived by three sons from his marriage to ex-wife, Jeanne Troiano: Stephen Troiano, of Bethel, CT; Glen Troiano (Scott Rhodes), of Winston-Salem, NC; and Jason Troiano, of Bedford Hills, NY; brother Hugo Troiano (Nancy); six grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and close friends. Nick will be inurned at Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC, at a later date.
