Shirley Jean (Boyd) Ellington

Shirley Boyd Ellington, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away in Greensboro on July 20, 2023 at the age of 77. Shirley Jean was born in Oxford, N.C. on April 18, 1946, to Wallace M. Boyd, Sr., and his wife Mozelle (Guerrant). Shirley graduated from Dabney High School in 1964. In August of 1969 Shirley and H. B. "Chubby" Ellington were married, and the following year the couple were blessed with a son. Shirley became a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1982 and spent most of the next twenty-five years working to improve the lives of those in need of long-term care. Shirley was a member of Rolling Roads Baptist Church in Greensboro where she occasionally taught Sunday school, volunteered in the library, and was active in the choir until health issues no longer permitted. Shirley loved to laugh and enjoyed music, especially gospel, but would hum along or tap her foot with anything within earshot. She shared her love of reading with her son and grandchildren and most family outings with Shirley included a trip to the library, a bookstore, or both.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; as well as Chubby Ellington; and her brother Wallace "Milton" Boyd, Jr. She is survived by her son, David Ellington, and his wife Mary-Grace; in addition to grandchildren Sebastian Ellington, Dylan Ellington (Raven), Jerica Evans (Wesley), Brandon Moore, Grayson Ellington (Reagan), and Sarah Ellington (Brittney); great-grandson Finnick Evans, as well as brother, David Boyd (Betty).

A memorial service will be held at Rolling Roads Baptist Church in Greensboro on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at 2pm. Final arrangements were made by Twin City Cremations of Winston-Salem.
